Why send a backhoe to do what a 3/8” wrench can do?
A lack of adequate drainage or impermeability of backflow material can cause structural failure due to the build-up of excessive hydrostatic pressure. Thus engineering solutions for filtration and drainage are critical for the preservation of Earth Retaining Structures (ERS) to meet design life expectations. Current engineering solutions for drainage and filtration systems are not always successful, particularly as the system ages, experience overload or soil instability. Within the design life, it is likely existing systems will fail and repair options will be limited and expensive. This presentation will review how old-world weep-hole technology has advanced to the 21st century allowing for both drainage and filtration from the front side of an ERS. Front mounted weep-hole filters allow access to maintain a drainage system at a significantly lower cost than excavating with a backhoe. Weep-hole filters can be removed and cleaned or, if necessary, replaced with only a 3/8” wrench.

Application knowledge would include filtration with erosion control, how to recognize potential wall failures, where and when are Jet Filters best used, how they are installed and options for existing walls vs. new construction. Our presentation will also review real world failures with Jet Filter solutions, including the George Washington Parkway sinkhole. Lastly, we will review how Jet Filter System is successfully servicing several state DOT’s.
